CFTR dysfunction Viscous secretions Infection Inflammation Lung damage Abnormal lung function Death The primary lesion in patients with CF, the dysfunction of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), leads to overproduction of mucus in the lungs. This increased mucus production predisposes the patient to inflammation, as well as increasing the likelihood of infection. Both infection and inflammation can lead to lung damage, caused by proteolytic enzymes released by both bacteria and immune cells. In addition, once infection and inflammation and are established, a cycle of increasing severity is started.
