Chapter 2 Waves A wave is a disturbance that travels through matter or space. Matter or space is called a medium which includes such things as air and water. Once the wave is created, ENERGY Will travel through the medium.
2
2 Types of Waves Longitudinal Wave : Does require a medium in order to travel. Ex. Sound Transverse Wave : Does not require a medium in order to travel. Ex. Light
4
What determines the speed of sound ?
The density of the material or medium The more dense the medium, the faster sound will travel
5
Parts of a Wave Crest : the highest part of a wave
Trough : the lowest part of a wave Wavelength : the distance from crest to crest Wave height : The distance from trough to crest Amplitude : the distance from the rest position to the crest
7
Frequency : the number of waves that pass a given point per second.
What is the relationship between the wavelength and frequency ?
8
Equations Speed = wavelength x frequency
Frequency = speed / wavelength Wavelength = speed / frequency Frequency = 1 / time
9
UNITS Speed: meters / second Wavelength: meters Frequency: Hertz
Time: seconds
10
Electromagnetic Waves
All electromagnetic waves travel …….. Like a transverse wave At the speed of Light ( 3.0 x 10^8 m/sec. )
11
Types of Electromagnetic Waves
Radio Wave Microwave Infrared Visible Light Ultraviolet X ray Gamma Ray
