WHAT is Imperialism? A policy of extending a country's power & influence through diplomatic, economic, or military force. Review Political, social, and economic factors

The Context End of 18th century – colonialism seemed dead
Britain had lost the American colonies Spain & Portugal’s power in South America was reduced BUT….. Nationalism - (belief that a people’s loyalty should not be to a king, but to a nation of people that share a common history) Leads to development of nation-states - increased competition between states
