Photosynthesis
2
“Process by which energy is converted into food”
Takes place in chloroplasts CO2 + H2O + energy O2 + C6H12O6
3
Importance of Photosynthesis
Source of food Source of oxygen Stores carbon dioxide
5
Site of Photosynthesis
Leaves
6
Two Types of Reactions in Photosynthesis
Chlorophyll – main pigment which allows photosynthesis to occur Light Dependent a. uses light to release oxygen and create ATP (energy) b. occurs in cholorplast Light Independent a. uses energy to to produce food (does not need light)
7
Cellular Respiration v. Photosynthesis
Both biochemical pathways “when the products of a reaction are used as the reactants of another reaction. Neither process could run without the other” C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy) CO2 + H2O + energy O2 + C6H12O6
8
Autotrophs (producers)
a. make glucose b. plants c. give us food Heterotrophs (consumers) a. obtain glucose by eating other things b. depend on autotrophs for glucose c. animals, fungi, bacteria
