Today’s Lesson Scientific Methods in Earth Science
Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) S6CS1- Students will explore the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works. a. Understand the importance of—and keep—honest, clear, and accurate records in science. b. Understand that hypotheses are valuable if they lead to fruitful investigations, even if the hypotheses turn out not to be completely accurate descriptions.

Today’s Lesson Conti. C6CS9-Students will investigate the features of the process of scientific inquiry. Students will apply the following to inquiry learning practices: a. Scientific investigations are conducted for different reasons. They usually involve collecting evidence, reasoning, devising hypotheses, and formulating explanations. c. Accurate record keeping, data sharing, and replication of results are essential for maintaining an investigator’s credibility with other scientists and society.

Steps of the Scientific Method
Ask a Question Form a Hypothesis A hypothesis is a possible explanation or answer to a question that is based on prior scientific research or observation also called an educated guess. Asking a question helps focus the purpose of an investigation. Give example of David Gillette

Test the Hypothesis Controlled Experiments Making Observations Keeping Accurate Record Analyze the Results Review tables and graphs of data collected while testing a hypothesis Draw Conclusions Did the results support the hypothesis? Communicate Results Scholarly journals Lectures Controlled- testing one factor or variable at a time give example of Jello Observations- explain that scientist can not always control variables. Therefore, they use observations. Keeping accurate records- refer to the GPS and talk about the importance of reporting findings based on facts not opinions

Virtual Lab In today’s Virtual Lab we will use the scientific method to determine how to create the most efficient compost pile. What is compost? Compost is decomposed matter used as fertilizer or as mulch. What is mulch? Mulch is material put around plants to help them retain water.
