One or many cells? Advantages and Disadvantages
2
Part 1: Reproduction Using the cards provided complete the table on your worksheet. Asexual Sexual
3
Unicellular reproduction
It is time efficient and there is no need to search for mate. It requires less energy.(Cell division) Advantage There is no variation - if the parent has a genetic disease, then the offspring does too. Disadvantage It is less complex so it is completed in a very short period of time. Advantage This usually produces multiple offspring. Advantage
4
Multicellular reproduction
There is a need to find a mate, and this requires more energy and is less efficient. Disadvantage There is much variation, and uniqueness, so the organism is more protected. Advantage It is more complicated so it can take several months to complete. Disadvantage This usually produces two or fewer offspring. Disadvantage
5
Part 2: Finding food Unicellular Multicellular
What are characteristics of each, which is simpler?
6
Unicellular Advantage:
They are smaller in size so they do not need special food and it is easy. Disadantage: They are so small they cannot move to find other food.
7
Multicellular Advantages They eat different food than other species
Some organisms can eat more than one type of food Disadvantages They have to hunt and complete for food They need special cells to process different food sources
8
Part 3: Environmental Changes
Vacuole = holds water Paramecium Less water available Unicellular organisms reproduce quickly/change quicker Paramecium is a small organism How do they develop larger vacuole over generations? Empty Vacuole = holds no water
9
Part 3: Environmental Changes
Less water available Multicellular organisms reproduce much slower /take much longer to change. Flower is larger more complex organism Why did the flowers die and not the paramecium?
10
Part 4: What happens if the organism is injured?
Antibiotic What happens to the bacteria? The whole cell dies!
11
Part 4: What happens if the organism is injured?
2 inch cut from broken glass What happens to the person? The cut heals!
12
Unicellular organism working
There are 15 different jobs and only 1 person, who works all the time!
13
Multicellular organism working
There are 15 different jobs and 15 people to do the work! They share jobs!
