Mechanisms of odor discrimination are depicted using colored symbols to represent individual volatile compounds in an odor blend. In species-specific odor recognition, discrimination is based on compounds restricted to a single species or group of related species. In ratio-specific odor recognition, discrimination is based on the ratios of blend compounds. In whole-blend odor recognition, discrimination is based on the entire blend or many of its components perceived as a whole.
