1 Colloidal Synthesis of High-Quality Lanthanide-Oxide Nanocrystals

Charles Cao, Department of Chemistry, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611 The primary goal of this proposed research is to develop a non-injection synthesis for producing high-quality lanthanide-oxide nanocrystals. Such a synthesis, without precursor injection, is easy for small-scale laboratory synthesis, and more importantly, it is suitable for the industrial preparation of high-quality nanocrystals in a large quantity at a low cost. In the past year, we have achieved following accomplishments. (1) We have developed detailed methods for the synthesis and assembly of lanthanide oxide nanocrystals such as Gd2O3, Eu2O3, and Sm2O3. (2) We have successfully extended the non-injection synthesis for making high-quality II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals with size and shape control. (3) We have developed a new synthesis for making high-quality uranium-dioxide nanocrystals. 20 nm 60 nm Superlattice of Gd2O3 nanocrystals UO2 Nanocrystals CdS Nanowires
