2 SOLDERING & SAFETY

3 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure…
safety glasses are worn when soldering. This includes all individuals in the vicinity of someone who is soldering. to place soldering iron in an approved holder when not in use. It is hot and can cause burns. the soldering iron is placed so that the cord does not get caught up in your arms or on others.

4 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure… to have proper ventilation.
to know the materials that make up the solder. the type of solder is safe to use in your working environment.

5 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure…
the components to be soldered are secured before trying to solder. to have plenty of space to operate. Do not let others overcrowd the work space. to use the proper sized point for the size of the soldering job to be done.

6 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure…
the tip on the soldering iron has a sharp point on the end and has not been damaged in any way. to check the power cord for burned or melted sections that show bare wires. Label those cords “DO NOT USE” and have the instructor repair or replace. not to touch molten solder - it is hot!

7 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure…
solder strand is long enough to keep fingers away from the hot iron. to tie back long hair and to remove or tuck loose clothing. to use heat sinks for heat sensitive parts and to give the heat sinks sufficient time to cool before removing.

8 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure…
to wipe excess solder off with a wet sponge or cloth. not to flick solder off from the iron. Flicking can cause solder to spray and hit skin or get into eyes. to hold the scrap end when cutting excess leads, or the scrap lead may get thrown into the air.

9 SOLDERING & SAFETY Make sure…
leads are cut evenly with wire cutters, and that leads are not shorting across other traces or leads.
