Velocity and Acceleration (Set up for Cornell Notes)
2
Velocity Velocity = speed in a given direction.
2 parts: speed and direction. Eg. 25 m/s east.
3
Calculating Velocity Velocity = distance ÷ time in a given direction.
4
Velocity Problem Spider-man jumps a distance of 50 meters in the north direction. It took him 10 seconds to do this. What is his velocity? 5 m/s north.
5
Graphing Motion The distance variable is on the Y axis
The time variable is on the X axis. The slope = the speed of the object.
6
Distance Vs. Time Graph The speed is constant if the line is straight on the graph. What is the speed? 10 m/s.
7
Practice Graph Are both swimmers swimming at constant speed?
What is the speed of swimmer 1 and 2? Swimmer 1 = 2m/s, Swimmer 2 = 1m/s.
8
Acceleration Acceleration measures the change in velocity.
When the speed increases or decreases, the velocity changes = acceleration. When the direction of an object changes, the velocity changes = acceleration.
9
Accelerating? A person on the Ferris wheel travels at a constant speed of 20 m/s. Are they accelerating?
10
Calculating Acceleration
The equation is: Starting velocity Final velocity Time
11
Acceleration Problem A roller coaster starts down a slope with a velocity of 4m/s west. At the bottom of the slope 3 seconds later it has a velocity of 22 m/s west. Does the coaster accelerate? Find the acceleration. 6m/s² west
12
Acceleration Problem 2 Neo jumps off a building and 7 seconds later is flying at a velocity of 42 m/s east. What is his acceleration? 6 m/s² east.
13
Acceleration Poster You will create a colorful poster that will be divided into 4 sections. One section will have the definition of acceleration including the 3 ways an object can accelerate. The other 3 sections will have drawings of each of the ways an object accelerates.
14
Acceleration Graph The time variable is on the X axis.
Speed or velocity is on the Y axis. The slope of the line on a speed vs. time graph is equal to the acceleration of the object. A straight line means that acceleration is constant.
15
Acceleration Graph Practice
west Acceleration is constant and is positive. Acceleration value can be found by calculating the slope of the line. 0.5 m/s² west.
