Definition Coordination “ can be used to join two sentences when the ideas in them are equally important” (483). Subordination “ can be used to join two sentences when one idea is more important than the other” (483).

Practice Using Coordination and Subordination
“Coordinating conjunctions are words and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet. They join ideas of equal importance” (484). Example: Antarctica is huge, and it is 98 percent ice. Subordinating conjunctions after, although, as, as if, because, before, even though, if, since, so that, unless, until, when, where, and while” (489). Example: It is hard to sleep in the city because it is always noisy.
