Intermediate Injury Prevention (Level II) The Role of Data in Injury Prevention August 23-26, 2011 Billings, MT Total Session Time: minutes. Participant Data Collection Exercise: Put this slide up on the screen at the start of Day One, so participants see it as they enter the training room. While they are filtering in, participants should complete and turn in the Data Collection Form to instructors Data from these forms will be used for the INTRODUCTION TO DATA session. After participants turn in their forms one instructor will be responsible for inserting in the PPT template: “Student Profile Template”. This will serve two purposes: provide additional opportunity to introduce course participants to each other and get them thinking about how data is collected and used. Note to Instructors: Identify yourself, your job title and employer. Although your audience will have attended the Intro course, they are still learning about the Injury Prevention Program. Their interest was piqued at the first course, that is why they are here. Welcome them back and acknowledge that they are making a commitment to injury prevention. Identify locations attendees traveled from to attend, thanking them for taking the time to make the trip. Acknowledge the course is taught with a team approach. Briefly introduce other instructors, and advise class that instructors contact information is located in the binder, and that ALL instructors are open to being contacted for technical assistance after the course. Course Logistics Restrooms/Drinking Fountains/ Phones/Etc.
Cell Phones…turn off ringer. Photos Room lock-up Local attractions Course Start: 8:00 am Course End: 4:30 pm “Housekeeping” & logistical items: Locations of nearby restrooms, drinking fountains, telephones and smoking areas Meeting room logistics (will it be locked up during lunch? At night?) Mention likelihood that instructors will take photos during sessions for use in program reports, training, etc. Ask all cell phone ringers be turned off and conduct calls outside of classroom. Nearby restaurants and other local attractions (shopping malls, current civic events or shows, other local entertainment); Provide map if possible. Group dinner possibilities? (PRIOR to course, if instructors are inclined, check on any nearby restaurants that can accommodate a large group dinner) Discuss course start & ending times for each day

Why are some instructors wearing uniforms?

Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A Commissioned Corps U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) The IHS is a agency of PHS One of 7 uniformed services Note to Instructors: It is the decision of the course instructors/hosts as to whether or not to wear uniforms. If they are worn, you may want to provide a description of why. The majority of course participants are going to be familiar with IHS and the Commissioned Corps; for courses in areas where uniforms are not routinely worn, the information in this presentation may be necessary.

Overview of IHS Injury Prevention Program’s training master plan:
You should be familiar with the middle, colored section, this is the core IP short course. The goal is for participants to master the 7 core competencies over 3 course. The program recognizes that there are other training needs that can be address in the short course format than what is covered in the 3 course. The bottom of the slide identifies additional short courses, some have been developed, some are to be developed. The top of the slide shows the long term training available from the IP program. 2 Fellowship tracks and college based courses IHS has supported.

To use data in your injury prevention efforts This will be done using mini lectures skill building exercises large group discussion small group discussion This course is the 2nd in a series of three courses The material will build on and expand knowledge & skills gained in the Introduction to Injury Prevention course. Teaching styles will include: mini lectures, case studies, skills building exercises, as well as, small and large group discussions that take place throughout the course. We have much to learn from each other. Everyone brings their own experiences; sharing them benefits us all. Encourage students to share personal experiences related to course topics.

Participate & Interact: This is an interactive course and each student is expected to actively participate in the exercises, encouraged to talk with instructors and each other about specific injury prevention issues at any time. Introductions of Instructors & Students: Utilize icebreaker handout in session planning materials to consider ways to learn about participants. In cases where the participants already know one another, an energy building exercises will be more appropriate. (Brief Introductory Questions intro/icebreaker method): Leaving the questions on this slide on the screen. Have students answer and report back; or have pairs interview one another and introduce their classmate. Include appropriate number of questions per student for this session, using approx 3 miniutes/person. One instructor should facilitate the introductions and provide feedback to question 3 (i.e., acknowledge whether or not this course will address the student’s expectations) Another instructor should record participant responses to question #3 on a flipchart.
