1 Mental Health & Behavioral Disorders. Specifically Anxiety
By Zach Sempier

2 Interesting Facts Who are they?-Student whose behavior severely affects their education in a negative way for an extended period of time and they are the most difficult students to teach especially when compared to other disabilities Teachers must use the IDEA definition in order to accurately determine if a child has a disorder which is not a widely accepted definition due to only focusing on emotions, not worrying about non academic benefits to school, and not including student with social maladjustment, which is extremely similar to those with behavioral disorders

3 Interesting Facts Continued
Kids with EBD have less social skills and if they externalize their behaviors tend to be more likely to get into a fight and be aggressive towards other students, while a student with internalizing behaviors tend to be seclusive or exhibit distracting behavior such as being vocal with anxiety. Corporal punishment is still used in schools today despite lack of research proving any positives from it. Seclusion, where a kid is locked into a room like in solitary confinement, and restraint are also surprisingly still used in schools despite having no permanent gains to fixing the behavior.

4 Website Summary Information
Name: National Institute of Mental Health Location: Washington DC Web location: Mission Statement: To improve everyone’s understanding of mental illness through research which in turn will find a cure and help people recover. In order to carry on this mission new scientific ideas and methods must be used to further our knowledge on the mind, actions, and experiences of people. The more forward progress in science, the more forward progress that will occur for mental illness cures. There was no information on the history of the organization

5 Content Summary Has the types of anxiety( With Links), signs and symptoms( With Links), diagnosis and treatment, and a link to clinical trials Panic Disorder affects twice as many women than men and it appears to be hereditary For some people it leads them to develop agoraphobia, which is a fear of open spaces. People with this avoid doing simple tasks like shopping or driving. GAD has no cause or reason why some people get it while others do not.

6 Content Summary Continued
GAD is when anxiety, with everyday tasks, lasts for at least 6 months or more . Typically occurs between childhood and middle age with the average age being 31 Antidepressants can actually be used as a type of treatment

7 Impressions and Reflections
This organization seems to do a excellent job at painting a picture in people's minds about what these disorders can do to a person. I have experience dealing with friends who have this, but even I could not figure out some of these bits of information that they had. For example, people with panic disorder developing the fear to go outside. I never realized that’s the point to which it could get to.

8 Interview Summary Can’t go to crowded events and doing simple tasks like driving are difficult. Medication did not work. Therapy and talking to friends does wonders Nothing started the disorder. It was always around 3 most important things to help someone with Anxiety is to be patient/not push things, try to get them out of the situation that is causing the anxiety, and really reassure them that they are not being a nuisance. Education wise they can’t take a test or do homework without crying and on a test they will change their answer numerous times even when they know it is right.

9 Interview Reaction The education effect it has really did not surprise me as much as I would have thought. Nearly everyone suffers from test anxiety so the fact that someone with an anxiety disorder has break downs, is not surprising The homework but however did surprise me. Overall I was not really surprised at the information I received only because I had a girlfriend that had an anxiety and panic disorder as well and I learned about how to deal with them and make things as better as I could. I really had to learn the hard way what anxiety can do to a person.
