2 Quotations We use quotations in a sentence when a person is speaking.

3 Rule #1 Place a comma after the word that tells you that people are saying something.

9 Rule #2: When the quotation comes first in a sentence, a comma and question mark sets off the quotation. EX) “It was a monster,” replied May. “It was enormous!” she added.

15 Rule #3 When the quotation is interrupted by words that tell who is speaking, use two sets of quotation marks. “Tom is going to the mall,” he added, “because he needs a gift for his mom.”

Place a comma after the word that tells you that people are saying something. Put quotation marks before the first word someone says and after the punctuation mark. Capitalize the first word that someone says.
