Part 1: Finding the Information to Cite a Source
4
What information do you need to cite a Book?
Author Title/Subtitle of the Book Editor (if available) Publishing Company Copyright Year What information do you need to cite a Book?
5
Where do you find the source information for a Book?
Most of the source information you need will be found on the TITLE PAGE of the book. You will find the following information on the title page: The author’s name The book’s title/subtitle The editor’s name (can also be on the copyright page) The company that published the book Where do you find the source information for a Book?
6
Title Page Example Title Subtitle Author
Editor is SOMETIMES listed here (but not on this book) Publishing Company
7
Where do you find the source information for a Book?
The copyright year is not on the title page. You can find this piece of information on the copyright page, which is usually on the back of the title page. REMEMBER—The editor can be on the copyright page as well. Where do you find the source information for a Book?
8
Copyright Page Example
Editor If more than 1 editor is listed, go with the first.
9
What information do you need to cite an Anthology?
Author (If indicated. Authors are not always given with anthologies) Title of Article Title/Subtitle of Anthology Editor (if indicated) Volume Number Publishing Company Copyright Date What information do you need to cite an Anthology?
10
Where do you find the source information for an Anthology?
You can find MOST of the information necessary to cite an anthology in the same places that you find the source information for a book. Where do you find the source information for an Anthology?
11
Anthology Title Page Title Volume Number Publishing Company
You do NOT need this information. It’s a listing of the articles covered alphabetically in this volume. Volume Number Publishing Company
12
Anthology Copyright Page
Editor (if multiple editors are listed, you go with the first one)
13
Where do you find the source information for an Anthology?
The Article Title will be whatever entry you read in the anthology. Authors are either listed on the title page (if it’s one or two), WITH the article, or not at all. Anthologies are often written by a group of people, and the individual authors frequently do not have their names attached to the individual articles they write. If this is the case, then there is no author. Where do you find the source information for an Anthology?
14
Anthology Article Page
Article Title Author’s name (if available) can come after the article title or … Anthology Article Page …Author’s name could also be put at the end of the article. This anthology article does not have author’s listed. There are also no authors on the title page, so no author for this citation.
15
What information do you need to cite the Internet?
Author Title of the Article Title/Subtitle of the Website Date the Site Was Created, Updated, or Copyrighted URL Date the Website Was Viewed What information do you need to cite the Internet?
16
Where do you find the source information for the internet?
Websites are difficult to cite because there is no consistent place to find the needed information. If a website/article has an author (most websites DO NOT have an author), then the name will be on the homepage or the article page. The article title is the name of the page/link where you get your information. The website’s name is usually found on the homepage. The created/updated/copyright date is usually found on the homepage at the bottom. Where do you find the source information for the internet?
17
A google search for “ancient Egypt” found this site and article:
Internet Example
18
Website Article Page (Top)
URL (only need main website address [i.e. you stop after domain--.com, .edu, .gov]. In this case “eu”. You wouldn’t include “/egypt/”) Website Name Website Article Page (Top) Article Title Author (will either be listed at the beginning of the article, the end of the article, the website information section at the bottom, or not at all.) In other words, you usually have to do a little hunting for the author. Published Date
19
Website Article Page (Middle)
You DON’T need this. This is a heading within the article, NOT the article title itself. Article titles will ALWAYS be what is at the top of the page, not what is in the middle.
20
Website Article Page (Bottom)
Author information and publication date are usually at the bottom of the article page and not the top. This website was unique in that it gave them at both the top and bottom. Sometimes all you get is a copyright year. If that’s the case, it’s at the bottom. Go with the most recent copyright year if you don’t have any other dates.
21
Part 2: Citation Practice from Sources
22
Using the MLA Citation Guide and the MLA Citation Practice Packet, cite the sources while pulling the data needed on your own. Do not forget the formatting rules (punctuation, spacing, etc.)! You will also NOT do in-text citations for this exercise. If you missed this class, you will have to come to me for the corrections on part 2. Instructions
