Water Use and Management
3
Global Water Use Most is used to irrigate (water) crops.
Water use is affected by: Availability of water Population size Economic conditions Water is also used for industry and residential use. Europe and North America have the highest percentage of industrial water usage.
5
Residential Water Use Differs from country to country.
Cooking, drinking, washing, toilet flushing, lawn watering, car washing…
7
3. Water Treatment: making water potable (safe for drinking)
It removes dangerous elements: mercury, arsenic, lead (poisonous) Removes pathogens: organisms that cause illness or disease (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasitic worms). They are found in water contaminated by sewage or feces. (see page in textbook)

11
Industrial Water Use Manufacturing goods (computers, cars, clothes…
Dispose of waste Generate electricity Most water is used to cool power plants (like nuclear power plants)
13
Agricultural Water Use
Used for irrigation (watering) crops. 2. 67% of water used in the world is for crops.
14
Water Management Projects
Water Diversion Projects Diverting a river into canals that flow a different way. Provides water to places that have little of it.

16
Water Management Projects
Dams and Reservoirs When a river is dammed it forms a reservoir behind the dam. Water from reservoir is used for drinking, irrigation, industry, agriculture, prevents floods Problem: changes the ecosystem
17
Dam and Reservoir
18
Water Conservation In Agriculture: using drip systems instead of sprinklers. In Industry: recycling of cooling water and wastewater. At Home: low flush toilets and shower heads, watering lawns in the evening, limiting car washing…
19
Sprinklers vs. Drip Systems
21
Future Solutions for Water Conservation
Desalination: removing salt from salt water Problem: uses a lot of energy so too expensive for developing countries. Transporting Water: towing icebergs, towing bags of water from Alaska to states that need it. Problem: how to do it and at what cost.
22
Review What are three major uses for water?
What is most of the fresh water in the world used for? What does potable mean? What is a pathogen? What is irrigation? How can you conserve water? What 3 conditions affect water use?
