Pope Francis was elected as the 266th Catholic Pope on Wednesday 13th March. White smoke poured out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel to tell us that the cardinals had chosen the next leader of the Catholic People.

5. Why is he called ‘Francis’?
Just as we choose a name of a saint we admire or try to be like, when making the Sacrament of Confirmation, The Pope chooses a name of a Holy Person who they want to be like. He chose the name ‘Francis’ after his favourite saint, ‘Saint Francis of Assisi’ who is the patron saint of the poor and of nature. Perhaps you could find out more about this famous saint.

6. About His Health
He has lived for more than 50 years with one functioning lung. He had the other removed as a young man because of infection.
