Originally created by John Styth Pemberton in 1885 under the name Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. The original ingredients included: Syrup Cocaine (not on purpose) Alcohol Kola nut

3 1885 Brings Change Temperance movement in Atlanta
Cause Pemberton to develop a non-alcoholic version of his French Wine Coca Still contained cocaine New version first sold at the soda fountain at Jake’s Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta. Now with carbonated H2O Claimed that the new drink could cure such ailments as headache and morphine addiction. His accountant came up with the script and new name (Coca-Cola).

4 1888: Foundation for a Company
Pemberton, who was very sick with cancer, sells the rights to the formula to ensure that the drink (brand) would continue to grow after his death. Wanted his son to always have a living Son died of morphine overdose soon after Died completely broke Sold the rights to Asa Candler in 1887 for $2,300 Incorporates The Coca-Cola Company in 1888 Used lots of advertisements First to bottle the drink in 1894 Cocaine removed in 1903

5 1919: New Ownership In 1916 Candler became mayor of Atlanta and gave up running the company. Gave company stock to his children, and they sold the company to Ernest Woodruff in 1919 for $25 million Candler is still known for heavily advertising the drink.

6 1923: A Worldwide Company Ernest Woodruff turned the company over to his son Robert. Turned the company from a regional hit to a worldwide company Lead the company in some capacity for more than 60 years Continued to advertise the brand
