What is the sun? What is the structure of the sun?
What features can you see on the sun?
2
The sun: No solid surface Big ball of gas 1/4Helium 3/4Hydrogen
1,000,000 times the volume of Earth Largest object in our solar system Medium size star
3
Layers of the sun Core Radiation Zone Convection Zone
Where sun produces energy Radiation Zone Electromagnetic radiation Convection Zone Outermost layer
4
The Sun’s Atmosphere Photosphere Chromosphere Corona “Crown”
Inner layer What you can see Chromosphere Middle Layer Corona “Crown”
5
Solar Eruptions A sneeze from the sun
Similar to a volcano on Earth Very Powerful Effects can be felt on Earth
6
Solar Flares
7
Prominences Eruption of ribbon-like plasma
Extend in a loop as it traces the Sun's magnetic fields. Tend to form over a timeframe of a day or several months
8
Prominence Prominence are huge loops of gas that connect different parts of sunspot regions. A solar flare is an explosion caused by hydrogen getting really hot, the gas shoots out into space causing a solar flare. Sort of like an after shock of an earthquake
9
So what is the difference?
Prominence A prominence looks like a ribbon of glowing gases and disappears in a few days or months. Solar Flare A solar flare is an explosive eruption of waves and particles that lasts for minutes or hours.
