Vocabulary 1.8 Review Words

Law of Conservation of Matter
Matter can not be created or destroyed, only transformed. This means that matter never goes away, it just turns into something else.

Physical Properties  Color, smell, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, Magnetic/Not Magnetic, and density. There are many other physical characteristics that could be used.

Chemical Properties A characteristic or behavior of a substance that may be observed when it undergoes a chemical change or reaction. Smell, Bubble, or Release heat, etc.…

Physical Change A usually reversible change in the physical properties of a substance, such as size or shape: Freezing a liquid is a physical change.

Chemical Change Any change that causes a new substance to be formed.
For example, when the camp fire has burned completely out, what's left behind? Ashes! Ash is a new substance formed due to the burning of another substance, wood.

Pure Substance An element that is made from a single type of atom.
Examples of elements include iron, oxygen, hydrogen, gold, and helium.

Compounds Chemicals made from atoms of different elements joined by chemical bonds. They can only be separated by a chemical reaction.

Mixtures A mixture is made from molecules of elements and compounds that are simply mixed together, without chemical bonds. Homogeneous, Heterogeneous, and Solutions

Chemical Formula Tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound.

Valance Electrons The electrons located in the outer shell of an atom.

Atomic Structure Protons - A small particle that exists in the nucleus of every atom and has a positive charge of electricity Electrons – The negatively charged particle in an atom. Neutrons – the neutral (no charge) particle in the center of an atom
