1 Unit 2, Lesson 7: Naming Covalent Compounds

2 Starts with a metal: ionic Starts with a non-metal: covalent

3 Naming Covalent Compounds
Write the name of the first element, with a prefix to indicate the number of atoms. Write the name of the second element, with an “ide” ending, and with a prefix to indicate the number of atoms. EXCEPTION: If there is only one atom of the first element, do not use a prefix for that element. (E.g. CO2 is carbon dioxide.) Use P2S3 as an example as you go through the steps – 5 min

4 NOTE: If a compound has a chemical formula starting with an “H”, then it’s an acid. Acids are an exception to other naming rules. You will not be required to name acids in Chemistry 11, but you should be able to recognize them.

5 Brain Break!

6 Now You Try! Write the name of each of the following: CS2 SO Si2I6
10 min

7 Homework Naming covalent compounds: pg. 74 #8 and 9
Optional extra practice with names/formulae: pg. 75 #14-163 10 min
