Earliest American Civilizations were the Olmec. They settled around the Mexican Gulf Coast.

Through rich tombs and temples we know that priests and aristocrats stood at the top of Olmec society. Each village had their own king.

The Mayas were another great Indian tribe that was influenced by the Olmecs.
Unique Mayan farming methods allowed them to flourish throughout much of Central America.

Mayan farmers cleared forests, build and raised fields to hold rain, built drainage ditches.
They were able to produce enough maize, or corn, to feed their rapidly growing civilization.
