Homework 4 Due November You decide to go to a Radon spa for getting rid of your arthritis, the radiation level in the treatment rooms is 0.2 MBq/m3. Calculate the dose for a daily inhalation session of one hour using the formalism introduced in lecture 16. For an average fertilized area of 20 acres (≈ 162,000 m2) (using a „light“ spread of gal/acre for a typical Indiana farm) a total of 5.9 million Bq (MBq) is distributed annually. To what extend does this fertilizing effort enrich the soil in radioactive content if you assume a fertilization depth of 30 cm. Compare the radioactivity level with the natural soil activity (400 Bq/kg)! Fly-ash from coal power plant contains a total radioactivity of 780 Bq/kg which is emitted into the atmosphere. The annual production rate is 52,000,000 tons, thanks to 99% efficient filter only 1% gets into the atmosphere. Assume a homogeneous distribution over the US in the lower altitude range of 500 m and calculate the average dose by inhalation for the US citizen using the formalism introduced in lecture 16.
