1 A Design/Build Contractor’s Perspective
Educating Academia: A Design/Build Contractor’s Perspective John R. Wolosick, P.E. Hayward Baker Inc. Atlanta, Georgia International Workshop on Micropiles September 25-27, 2003 Seattle, Washington

2 The Benefits of an Academic Perspective:
Professors are Smart (They have to be!) Advancement of the State-of-the-Art Basic Research An Analytic Point of View Good Engineers are ‘Grounded’ in Basic Principals The Best Engineers understand Stress and Strain Elasto-Plastic Analysis Computational Analysis Computer Modeling (Finite Element)

3 Occasional Pitfalls of an Academic Perspective:
Elasto-Plastic Analysis (p-y analysis may overpredict deflections and bending moments) Finite Elements - Be sure to Avoid Garbage In = Garbage Out Applied Research Limited inclusion in teaching of: PRACTICALITY COST SCHEDULE SCOPE

4 Lateral Test Wanna Bet?

5 Practicality What is ‘Typical’ Construction?
What is being Built Every Day? Can the Project be built with: Reasonable Access Available Materials Available Equipment Where is the Water Table? Can We Access the Site? Do we have the time or money for the analysis? Is the Budget Reasonable?

12 Cost How much is it going to Cost? Is Mobilization a ‘Real’ Cost?
Can we accurately ESTIMATE the Costs? Are our ESTIMATES Grounded in Real World Costs? Where do we find costs for: Labor? Equipment? Materials? Drilling is EXPENSIVE (on Marriage costs more)

16 Schedule How Long is the project going to take?
Is the Work Sequential or Concurrent Is there enough time to perform the Work? If not enough time, How can we ‘Make Time’? Can we add more people? more equipment? Can we work longer shifts? double shifts? weekends? Will Weather affect the Work? Will Access affect the Work?

17 Additional Equipment and Personnel

18 Work Additional Shifts (Night)

19 Scope Who Provides the Design?
What Code is Applicable? (AASHTO, ACI, AISC, IBC?) What type of Analysis is Required? Who Prepares the Site for the Work? Who Provides Inspection? Who does Cut-offs/Builds Pile Connections? Who Builds Pile Caps? Who Handles the Drill Spoils?

20 Spoils Handling
