UTOPIAN SOCIETY
2
What is a Utopia? A Utopia is a perfect society, where everyone is happy and the political system runs flawlessly. The word Utopia comes from the Greek words for “no place” and “good place,” which sums up a Utopia pretty well. Most Utopias are philosophical and peaceful
3
Other Themes in Utopias…
Ecology- generally “green” societies Technology- advances eliminate death and pain Economy- usually socialist Religion- Christian/Jewish/Muslim Garden of Eden, Buddhist Nirvana, Hindu Moksha. Sometimes physical, sometimes a “state of mind.” (Hindu and Buddhist both have Nirvana- mean different things.)
4
Ms. Hendricks’s Utopia Nuclear family- close knit family structure, with relatives and other families living close by for support.
5
Ms. Hendricks’s Utopia, cont.
Economy- Capitalist socialism; take care of our people who can’t fend for themselves, but those who work hard can get ahead. (And teachers get paid like movie stars!)
6
Ms. Hendricks’s Utopia Technology- Not over abundant but useful and always functioning, fast internet, cheap computers, and some sort of device to ensure teleportation. And while we are at it, let’s put all roads in a giant bubble that is well lit, with no wind, rain, ice or snow.
7
Ms. Hendricks’s Utopia Ecology- “green” within reason. Preserve our planet, keep our society clean and pure, but don’t get militant about it. Military- this is necessary, but revamped, and mostly peaceful; preserves peace rather than starts war
