Snowball Activity 1. Write one thing you know about
Common Core State Standards (CCSS). 2. Write one question you have about CCSS. Give each participant sheet of blank paper. Follow above directions. Have them wad up their snowball. Have a snowball fight!!! Then they may comment or answer question. Repeat and throw again. This time they may comment and then share from their “snowball”. Put all unanswered questions on the “parking lot”. * Note – may also have a volunteer to take notes throughout the session.
3
Which one are you? What do these images mean to you? Share with your shoulder partner. Discuss/Share out: Example items to pull out…. Are you pushing the snowball up the hill …are you running from the snowball??? Where should we be ??? You are just like everybody else everyone will be able to identify with both of these at some point Etc…

HOW ? Standards of Mathematical Practice
Stress in the video Emily Barton talks about the mathematical practices and how the overlay of the practices on this 3rd grade cookie problem is what adds the depth…the manner is HOW this is taught. Not just the fact that they are doing multiplication and division in 3rd grade. Mathematical Practices (there are 8 of them !!!) = the HOW Mathematical Standards = the WHAT
7
Standards for Mathematical Practices
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 6. Attend to precision. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 4. Model with mathematics. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Groups share out.

Mathematical Character
As you listen to the following 5 min video clip commentary of Phil Daro, please pay attention to key concepts he uses to describe the Mathematical Practices. Be ready to share out your ideas/thoughts.

WHAT ? Standards of Mathematical Content
The 2nd piece of the math standards = The Mathematical Content Standards The Mathematical Content Standards = WHAT we teach

TNCore Focus Standards for each grade level for mathematics in grades 3-8
The 3-8 Math TNCore Focus Standards for the school-year are: Grade TNCore Focus Standards 3rd Grade Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division 4th Grade Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understanding of operations on whole numbers 5th Grade Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions Apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions 6th Grade Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems Apply and extend previous understanding of arithmetic to algebraic expressions 7th Grade Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations 8th Grade Define, evaluate, and compare functions Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations Math for TCAP will cover current TN standards minus the cut SPIs (See slide 37 and handout) as well as the above listed TNCore Focus Standards. The TNCore Focus Standards are 2 math standards per grade for grades 3-8 taken from CCSS. These same standards will be the focus of the TN CRA grade 3-8 in Oct/Feb/May. Note – similar standards for ELA 3-8 and Math K-2 and ELA K-2 are set to be released at some point (TBA~prior to testing)

Dropped Tennessee Math SPI’s
3rd Grade – dropped 8 Standards 6th Grade – dropped 8 Standards 4th Grade – dropped 9 Standards 7th Grade – dropped 8 Standards 5th Grade – dropped 5 Standards 8th Grade – dropped 5 Standards Have participants take a moment to review the (SPI’s) to be Dropped Handout Table Talk: What do you notice? …and deeper. 3rd Grade Math There were 28 cookies on a plate.
3OA.3 (Operations and Algebraic thinking): Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problems. There were 28 cookies on a plate. Five children each ate 1 cookie. Two children each ate 3 cookies. One child ate 5 cookies. The rest of the children each ate 2 cookies. Then the plate was empty How many children ate 2 cookies? Use multiplication equations and other operations, if needed, to show how you found your answer. Jane thinks this question can be solved by dividing 28 by 2. She is wrong. Explain using equations and operations why this is not possible.
