A history of Slavery Africans who were POW’s became slaves of Africans kings. Local African rulers sold slaves to Europeans

Beginning of the Slave Trade
Slave trade in the new world began with the Encomienda After many natives died of disease Europeans looked elsewhere for free labor.

Sugar Cane 1490’s- Europeans begin planting sugarcane.
Plantations- Large Agricultural states, were established to grow sugar cane in the Caribbean, and Brazil.

Growth of the Slave Trade
In 1518, a Spanish ship carried the first enslaved Africans directly from Africa to the Americas. Triangular trade- trade connected by Europe, Africa, and America.

Middle Passage Middle Passage- the name for the journey Across the Atlantic to the Americas.

Death Rates Many Africans died on the middle passage journey.
Even more died of new diseases in the new world due to lack of immunity. *Eventually Africans gained immunity

Effects of the Slave Trade
Led to depopulation in some areas of Africa Led to increased warfare in Africa Africans often traded for guns which further led to war in Africa.

Eventual Decline of the Slave Trade
1790’s the French abolished slavery. 1807- British abolish slavery 1865- United States abolish slavery.
