2 servile (adj): overly submissive, cringing
Dr. Frankenstein’s servant Igor is a pathetic creature, always muttering “Yes master, yes master,” in a servile manner.

3 extol (v): to praise As an English teacher, I will always extol the virtues of and benefits to be gained from reading.

4 disparity (n): inequality
The disparity in test scores between black and white students suggests that racial inequality is a problem still present in the United States.

5 flagrant (adj): glaringly wrong
Marvin Williams was ejected from the game after this flagrant foul against Rajon Rondo.

6 indolence (n): laziness
Cats are legendary for their indolence, much preferring laying around and spreading their hair on furniture than doing anything that might require effort. Variations: indolent (adj) The teacher tried to encourage the indolent students to study their vocab by promising a treat to the entire class if they all scored 80% or above.

7 acquiesce (v): to give in; agree
Politically active citizens are those who do not want to acquiesce to the status quo, but believe that things can and should be done better.

10 capricious (adj): whimsical, unpredictable
The capricious behavior of women is the frequent cause of extreme aggravation in the American male.

11 austere (adj): severe, strict
Mrs. Snodgrass was known as being the most austere teacher in the school.

12 depravity (n): corruption, wickedness
Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer featured in three books, is a prime example of absolute depravity. Variations: depraved (adj) Hannibal Lecter is an utterly depraved character.
