The EU was created in the aftermath of the second world war. The first steps were to encourage economic cooperation. Countries that trade with one another are economically interdependent and will thus avoid conflict.

SINGLE MARKET The single market is all about bringing down barriers to enable everyone in the EU - individuals, consumers and businesses - to make the most of the opportunities offered to them by having direct access to 28 countries and 480 million people. Individuals: the right to live, work, study or retire in another EU country Consumers: increased competition leading to lower prices, a wider choice of things to buy and higher levels of protection Businesses: much easier and cheaper to do business across borders-no trade barriers.

Who can join the EU? Any European country may apply for membership if it respects the EU's democratic values and is committed to promoting them. But specifically, a country can only join if it meets all the membership criteria: Political –The country must show they treat people fairly, respect human rights, and allow voting in elections (democracy) Economic – it must have a stable, functioning market economy Legal – The country must change their laws to coincide with the laws of the EU. Ex. Environmental restrictions
