1.2 Classification of Matter
Chemistry Objectives 2
2
Essential Questions What is a pure substance? What is an element?
What is a compound? What are the two types of mixtures and how can you tell them apart? How can you tell the different classifications of matter apart?
3
Classification of Matter
PURE SUBSTANCES contain only one substance The two types are element and compound each will have its own unique chemical and physical properties
4
Elements ELEMENT- smallest particle of matter that retains its chemical identity Elements cannot be separated into a simpler substance by a chemical change We use symbols for the names of elements 1 or 2 letters, the first letter always is Capital and the second is lowercase See periodic table
5
Compounds Compound- 2 or more elements that are chemically combined
For example water is a compound Made up of hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) H2O
6
Mixtures Mixtures are a combination of 2 or more pure substances
Mixtures can be separated physically based on different physical properties
7
Mixtures (cont) Heterogeneous mixtures – has visibly different parts or phases (not consistent) granite, chocolate chip cookies Homogeneous mixture (solutions) - no visibly different parts or phases (consistent throughout entire solution) Saltwater, air
