Summer Learning Loss Did You Know? Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004). Summer Learning Loss More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities. As a result, low-income youth are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college (Alexander et al, 2007). Boone County Public Library

K-Count Each year in Kentucky for a 24-hour period, we count the number of homeless and precariously housed people. When I first volunteered for the count, I was sent to a neighboring county because I was told that there were no homeless people in Boone County. After all, Boone county is the second most affluent county in Kentucky. Working in the library, I had run into at least one. Meanwhile, the local school system hired a very proactive executive director of its student services. Over 400 children were homeless according to the McKinney-Vento definition.
