Topic: Cellular Reproduction Aim: How does mitosis occur? part 2
Do Now: Copy and complete the key using the diagram = Organism = ? =Nucleus =DNA = ?
2
The Cell Cycle All living organism have a life cycle.
A life cycle begins with the organism’s formation, is followed by growth and development, and finally ends in death. Individual cells also have life cycles.
3
The cell cycle is a series of events that takes place from one cell division to the next.
The time is takes to complete a cell cycle is not the same in all cells.
6
Interphase: Prophase:
The time period when cells grow, replicate, and prepare for MITOSIS Prophase: When scattered chromosomes pair up to form 23 pairs Nuclear membrane begins to disappears
7
Metaphase When chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
8
Anaphase: Once lined up chromosomes are pulled apart towards to the opposite ends of the cell Nuclear membrane begins to reappear Cell membrane begins to pinch in to form two separate cells Telophase:
9
Cytokinesis The equal division/ splitting of cytoplasm and its contents Results= 2 daughter cells In plants, a cell plate forms because the cell wall is to rigid to pinch in
10
Can you tell which phase the cell is in?

Can you tell which phase the cell is in?
12
Results of Mitosis two new nuclei that are identical to each other and the original nucleus. Each new nucleus has the same number and type of chromosomes.
13
Each of the trillions of cells in your body, except sex cells, has a copy of the same hereditary material. Every cell in your body, except sex cells, has a nucleus with 46 chromosomes—23 pairs.
