Introduction….15 points 1. Grabber….5 points
The grabber should be a sentence that gets your reader’s attention (for example: a fact, quote, statistic, funny phrase, shocking statement, etc.) 2. Position….5 points You should take a position either for or against what it is you are persuading me to do (for example: if your essay was about who should be leader, you should tell your reader who you chose in your intro. 3. Thesis….5 points Your essay, and all formal essays, should have a thesis statement that allows your reader to know what to expect from your essay.

Body….20 points At least 3 body paragraphs….5 points
At least 2 reasons for or against….5 points Evidence from Lord of the Flies….10 points

Conclusion….10 points Essay makes a concluding statement….5 points (for example: how we are all savages, how the characteristics in either Jack or Ralph make a good leader in anyone, how books like this should never be censored because of the lessons they teach, etc.) Thesis statement should be rePHRASED (not restated) so that you end where you began…5 points.

Mechanics….10 points Your essay should be generally free from all errors.

Organization….10 points Essay employs effective transitions from sentence to sentence and from paragraph to paragraph....5 points Your essay contains well formed sentences (i.e. no run on or fragments) and well formed paragraphs (i.e. you elaborate on your topic and don’t switch topics in the middle of the paragraph)….5 points

Format….25 points 12 font….5 points Typed….5 points
Double Spaced….5 points MLA Heading….5 points Name Date Class Teacher Works Cited page….5 points ****This is the area where most students lost points and it is the one area that you should always get full points. Losing points here means you simply didn’t follow directions.

Persuasion….10 points The goal of the essay was to persuade me to take on your point of view. Your essay should have employed persuasive tactics to get me to agree with your side of the story. If it did this you received full points.
