2. Resistance-- There were many people that fought against the capture and transportation of slaves from West Africa.
They fought in Africa- different leaders and groups resisting capture
There were communities of escaped slaves, like the Maroons
There were as many as 500 documented slave ship rebellions

3. Examples in Ghana
Ghana has been resisting the slave trade since the 1400s when the Portuguese first appeared. The Fante people are the ones that attacked the first Portuguese slavers.
In Ghana, King Tanja Musa Built a double set of walls around Gwolu City to prevent slave traders from entering the city.

6. Other examples in Ghana
In Sakana, people would camp out in caves when slavers were spotted. Someone would sound the alarm by blowing a horn and people would go to the caves, where they could store food and weapons to fight the slavers.
Now the caves are shrines.

7. Slave Sheds or barracoons
There were also raids on these way stations before the slavers could get enough captives together to make a trip to the coast.

8. Activity
In a group of three, using a laptop, look up the terms on your worksheets and how they are related to the resistance to the slave trade.
When you finish that, let’s all go to and look at slave ship resistance.
