While I am taking attendance, look at the back of the Jamestown article you read yesterday and answer the 5 questions in the middle (First Article—Jamestown: First English Colony in America).
Use the glue at your table to attach the documents you have to your notebook. (you should have the colored map, Jamestown article, and the sentence strips in the correct order.)

Development of the Southern colonies and Culture

3. Founding of Georgia
In 1732, King George II granted James Oglethorpe a charter* to start a colony south of South Carolina.
Land had been claimed by both Spain and Britain, but no one had settled there yet.
Oglethorpe was in the colony of Georgia from , given the rank of colonel and an army to defend the colony from Spain.

4. Purposes of Georgia
An alternative to jail for people who owed money (debtors). If you could not pay back the money you owed, in Britain you would go to jail. Or you could come to Georgia.
The colony was a buffer—a barrier between the hostile Native Americans and Spanish living in Florida, and the valuable riceand tobacco plantations in the Carolinas.

5. Labor Forces
As plantations grew (and profits $$), large labor forces were needed to work these plantations.
At first, Indentured servants came over, but were soon replaced by slaves (sadly, this was more economical).

6. Indentured Servants
English citizens coming over from England, with all the rights of English Citizens.
Signed a contract, in exchange for a ticket to America, agreed to work for about seven years.
At the end of the contract, they were free.

7. Slaves Came from Africa, without the rights of English Citizens.
Forced into slavery (captured in Africa, sold in North America)
Were seen as property, not people. Virtually no chance of freedom.

8. Middle Passage
Part of the Slave Trade that took slaves from Africa to North America.
Ships were crowded, diseases spread quickly.
