change of state – conversion of a substance from one physical form to another during a change of state the identity of a substance does not change but the energy of the substance does if energy is added or removed the substance heats or cools

evaporation – change from a liquid to a gas sublimation – process where a solid changes directly into a gas condensation – change from a gas to a liquid

during a change of state the temperature of a substance does not change condensation and freezing release heat - melting and evaporation absorb heat

law of conservation of mass – mass cannot be created or destroyed - total mass before and after a physical or chemical change is the same law of conservation of energy – energy cannot be created or destroyed - total energy before and after a physical or chemical change is the same
