Just to Be Clear… All of these are examples of reframes, since the essential nature of the person, object or event didn’t change — only your perception of them did. When you exchanged an old frame for a new one, things looked very different.

A Technique for Reframing
E + R = O Event + Response/Reaction = Outcome

Questions to Ask Others:
Meaning — what else could this mean? Context — where else could this be useful? Learning — what can I learn from this? Humor — what’s the funny side of this?

Questions to Ask Others:
Solution — what would I be doing if I’d solved the problem? Can I start doing any of that right now? Silver lining — what opportunities are lurking inside this problem? Points of view — how does this look to the other people involved?

Have a “Plagiarism Friday” (GASP!) where people bring in great ideas from outside your organization and ask them to share what makes the ideas innovative and creative. (And yes, I “borrowed” this idea.)
