1 Automatic Thoughts

2 Automatic Thoughts These are thoughts that quickly pop into your head throughout the day and are called automatic thoughts. They provide you with information like a conversation about what happens and what you do. We have these thoughts all of the time, and they are important because they affect what we do and how we feel.

3 How you see yourself These thoughts affect you in many ways:-
I’m clever I’m not very good at getting on with people I’m attractive

4 The way you judge yourself
Everything I do goes wrong I’m hopeless at change I did really well in my maths test

5 The way you see the future
One day I will settle down I’m never going to be happy There are plenty of things I can do in prison

6 These thoughts can be positive
I played well I had a really good time with my friends tonight I am getting better at relationships

7 NEGATIVE I will miss my appointment I cannot be bothered to go out
I am not going there everyone will look at me

8 Negative glasses Your thoughts are very negative
-you find it harder and harder to think positive and you will only see and hear the things that are not right. Your thoughts are very negative You find it hard to think, feel, hear or see anything good about yourself You do not recognise any positive skills You have a gloomy view about your future and do not believe that you can be successful For some people, this way of thinking takes over

9 Negative thoughts They might make you stop or avoid doing things
Miss going to college Become less interested in going out and meeting new friends Avoid going to new places for fear of people looking at you

10 Why do we listen to our negative thoughts?
They pop up into our head We do not check they fit with the facts They cannot be easily turned off They seem to make sense so we accept them as true without challenging them. We listen to them We are familiar with them because we hear them so often The more we hear the more we believe

11 Negative Trap Our negative thoughts make us feel unpleasant
Our unpleasant feelings prevents us from doing things Our unpleasant feelings can make us do unhealthy actions to make us feel better Doing less gives us more time to think about all the things that are going wrong This confirms our negative thoughts

12 Negative Cycle 7.Confirms your thoughts that you are a failure
1. Negative Thoughts 2. Create doubts/worries 3. Produces unpleasant feelings 4. Makes you feel sad, depressed, anxious, uptights 5. Affects what you do 6. Feel disinterested and unmotivated 7.Confirms your thoughts that you are a failure

13 Core Beliefs These are fixed statements/ideas we have about ourselves
They help us make sense of our world They are formed in childhood and our early experiences develop them into fairly rigid assumptions About how we see ourselves, how we judge what we do and how we view the future

14 Core Belief- nobody loves me
Core Beliefs- our automatic thoughts echo our core beliefs- Jessie’s core belief that no one loved her and her automatic thoughts proved her right! Unlovable Jessie! Mam and dad never listened to what I had to say Core Belief- nobody loves me I always get the blame My sister always got what she wanted It must be me! because even the teachers did not have any time for me My parents did not have any time for me

15 Understanding Understanding your core beliefs can help you to understand why you always end up thinking the same way and how you get stuck in your negative trap. Identifying core beliefs can help you to understand why the same problems keep occurring

16 Challenging core Beliefs
Negative Thought So What?- if this was true, what would this mean about me Evidence that does not support your core belief
