Education: Sharing educational resources
European Meteorological Society Education Project Education: Sharing educational resources Tomáš Halenka Coordinator of Education Project Team of EMS, Charles University, Prague
2
Outline Motivation EMS goals and objectives
What can be shared, how and why Sharing resources – problems EMS web overview, best practises – examples Discussion IFMS Education
3
Motivation Education matters typical for the activities of most NMSoc – option for IFMS cooperation Infrastructure developed to the quite different extent (AMS, RMetS, …, many small NMSoc with rather limited capability) Acknowledge the contribution of many other players (NMS, public organisations, institutes, non-profit organisations, other international and even private bodies – NCAR, UCAR, GLOBE, COMET, EUMETCAL of EUMETNET, EUMETSAT) IFMS Education
4
Role of education Public Science Policy Media IFMS Education

Education Project Goals:
to promote the provision of basic general education and awareness in meteorology so as to help people to understand the benefits coming from developments in meteorology and climatology, and to support education in meteorology and its applications as a scientific discipline Mission: initiate and manage a programme of work with specific outcomes related to the exchange of educational resources and professional development opportunities for teachers across Member Societies Tasks: Identifying relevant bodies, individuals and programmes where meteorological education or a dialogue on meteorology or its applications could occur. Establishing regular contacts with organizers of various European national education projects on meteorology and allied scientific subjects. Promoting on the EMS website existing teaching materials (e.g. RMetS, AMS, GLOBE, COMET, EUMETCAL). Supporting ECTOM IFMS Education
6
Objectives, ideas organization of education sessions of EMS/ECAM/ECAC Annual Meetings, in addition to individual contributions soliciting contribution of EUMETCAL, some bigger national societies with educational activities (RMetS, SMF, …), associate members with some educational activities (ESA, EUMETSAT, …), European projects with educational segment (ENSEMBLES, QUANTIFY, ACCENT), other educational activities across Europe or worldwide (e.g. GLOBE, METLINK?), connection to AMS educational activities educational portal at EMS website (or linked there) to the existing educational institutions or activities (EUMETCAL, ESA, EUMETSAT, GLOBE, RMetS, SMF, linkes to the educational packages with teaching materials (COMET, EUMETCAL, GLOBE, ESPERE, …), examples of good practice, education in atmospheric sciences in media (TVs, journals, internet), projects, … Looking for funding opportunity within some European structure to support more close cooperation in given subjects Work toward the formulation of “ideal” (minimum, maximum) curricula in meteorology and allied subjects for different grades or at least school levels to provide standard (best practice example) IFMS Education
7
What can be shared Raw materials – texts, pictures, videos, audios, schemes, diagrams Courses – lecture notes, chapters, course structures, contents, CAL materials, e-learning courses Complete simulators Know-how - best practises examples Supporting informations – databases, reports on education systems and opportunities IFMS Education
8
How it can be shared Internet – web, YouTube, social networks, smartphones Visits Conferences (EWOC, AMS, EMS, AGU, EGU, EUMETCAL) For free vs. selling IFMS Education
9
Added value for sharing
Structured information – databases, structured lists, „complete“ systematic coverage of the subject Language – „worldwide“ spread Web based, smartphone accessible Interactive – more attraction, enabling to solve problems, test the knowledge, feedback Global coverage of topics IFMS Education
10
Added value of sharing Visibility of your product
Testbed of your product in other environment – geographically, culturaly, … Feedback for further development, improvement Learning In case of databases – stimulation to get other data, information or materials IFMS Education
11
Sharing resources - problems
Most funding schemes for science support based on scientific results – not so much financial, capacity resources for education and outreach (depended on the region, rather poor in Europe, as my knowledge not so bad in U.S., where education/outreach usually requred and covered) School/public education – strong disadvantage against professional training University education closer to professional training In many regions language issue IFMS Education
12
Education & Qualification
Professional and Academic Education School, College Education Meteorological Societies' Educational Activities Educational Catalogues and Databases Meteorological Services, Institutes, Centres Schools Education Policy Miscellaneous IFMS Education
13
Good examples - practices
Projects awarded with EMS Outreach & Communication Awards Previous EMS edu sessions (available via EMS web) EMS web - education portal Thanks for your attention IFMS Education
14
Discussion (1) Is there active will to share the resources?
North – South, West – East devide Not exactly one directional procedure, it can result in more experience with the resources from different environments which can help in further development IFMS Education
15
Discussion (2) Cooperation in the preparation, maintainance and transfer of resources? availability of the modules, schemes, components of different resources in shape for simplifying the translation to other local languages U.S. experience?, other countries? cooperation on the development of the modules, their exchange (probably based on English) – big players in profesional area (EUMETSAT/COMET), smaller ones in school materials, etc. (GLOBE) IFMS Education
16
Discussion (3) Are the providers happy to share their resources ?
they did not suffer from that they feel comfortable with that they are lucky to see their product is spreading IFMS Education
