2 Document Analysis Document Analysis in AP US History isn’t difficult and you will use the same steps each time you analyze a document. We use the anagram H.I.P.P.O which stands for: (H)istorical Context (I)ntendended Audience (P)oint of View (P)urpose (O)rganization /Use in Argument(Only used when using the documents in the DBQ)

3 Historical Context Connect the document to specific historical events using outside examples. Connect the document across time to earlier and/or later eras or across space to events happening in different places.

4 Intended Audience Identify a person or group the author expects to inform or influence.

5 Point of View Who is the author? How did the author’s gender/race/economic status impact their written perspective?

6 Purpose Why did the author create the source?

7 Organization/Use in Argument
Put together first four and think about how it would support your argument(thesis)
