Please copy into your IAN! Metamorphic Rocks
Chapter 4.4 Objectives: Describe two ways a rock can undergo metamorphism. Describe the difference between foliated and non-foliated metamorphic rock.

I. Complete Change in Shape A. Caterpillar > Butterfly
B. Dry cookie dough ingredients > Gooey Cookies II. Origins of Change (2 step process) A. Heat B. Pressure C. Two Categories! 1. Contact a. b. 2. Regional Silly Putty example ( stretch bands into rocks 30x the size)
4
Please open your IAN to your Metamorphic Rocks notes/Roman Outline
5
Composition A. Original Minerals become new! 1. Index Minerals (Chlorite, Mica, Garnet) 2. Example Below!
7
Heat & Pressure! Textures A. Foliated 1. Bands or Planes
2. Schist Mica, Chlorite, Gneiss, Slate 3. Shale (sed) =Slate (Meta) 4. Slate (meta) = Phyllite (meta) 5. Phyllite (meta) = Schist Mica (meta) = Gneiss! B. Nonfoliated
8
1. No Bands, not aligned, scattered 2. Crystallization occurs
B. Nonfoliated 1. No Bands, not aligned, scattered 2. Crystallization occurs 3. Sandstone + Quartz = Quartzite 4. Limestone + Calcite = Marble V. Structures A. Deformation: __________(Silly Putty) 1. Squeezed or Stretched 30x the size 2. Creates folds and bands

In Summary: Metamorphic Rocks
Meta. Rocks occur when the structure, texture or composition has changed. Heat and pressure can change the existing minerals into new minerals. Metamorphic rock structures are caused by deformation. (silly putty)
12
Metamorphic Classification
Contact metamorphism: Happens when rock comes in very close contact with a magma chamber. This forms more from heat than pressure. (pancake batter) Regional metamorphism: happens when rock is under tremendous pressure from plate tectonics. Forms more from pressure than heat. (peanut butter cookies pressed with a fork)
14
2 Types of Texture Foliated – the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands. Examples : Slate, gneiss Nonfoliated – the texture in which the mineral grains are not arranged in planes or bands Examples: quartzite, marble
15
Basics: Which are nonfoliated?

We heard it, we did it, now let’s see it again!
Metamorphic Rocks Review Now let’s review our lab and analyze our qualitative observations!
