Figure 1 | Definition and concept of ACLF. The acute insult is hepatic one. This insult to a patient with chronic liver disease (and chronic injury) could result in ACLF. In a patient with ACLF, the nature and severity of acute insult needs to be identified and defined, the background chronic liver disease (chronic hepatitis or compensated cirrhosis) also needs to be assessed and defined.
