STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
NEHS P.O.W.E.R. LUNCH STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
2
What P.O.W.E.R stands for: Plan Organize Work Eat Relax
3
Schedule for P.O.W.E.R. Lunch
NEHS P.O.W.E.R. BELL SCHEDULE PERIOD START END Duration (min) 1st Period 7:40 9:05 85 2nd Period 9:10 10:30 80 Power A 11:15 45 Power B 12:00 3rd Period 12:05 1:25 4th Period 1:30 2:50 Students must be in place by the 5-minute tardy bell for Remediation, Tutorials and non-food areas. 4
Purpose of P.O.W.E.R. Opportunity for students to HAVE CHOICE in pursuing academic enrichment and extracurricular offerings during school day Students can use extended lunch to: Attend Remediation/Tutorials Study/complete homework Take a 5th Course Participate in enrichment activities Collaborate with Club Advisors and other students Intramurals/Exercise Buy Back Absences (2 P.O.W.E.R. blocks = 1 class period) Etc.
5
P.O.W.E.R. Lunch Because We Believe in YOU!
We Believe in the “power” of P.O.W.E.R. so much, that we are giving you, the students, 7 ½ hours a week (1 full day) to do what is best for you! What do we want you to gain from the experience? Find and spend time with at least one adult at North, who will get to know you as a person. Join a club or activity to make meaningful relationships and have fun Buy back your absences by attending remediation/tutorials (45 minute block = ½ class with that teacher) Work when you need to work, and relax when you need a break with friends or by yourself Ultimately, we want you to grow as a person: emotionally, physically and intellectually, while you are an important member of the Warrior Family.
6
How do we justify so much time for P.O.W.E.R.?
REMEDIATION! Edgecombe County Schools are required to provide remediation and enrichment to students during the school year. Instead of the traditional I/E block of minutes, we have opted for a “no box” model of choice that gives all of us great flexibility. With that being said, we designed P.O.W.E.R. around the 3 BIG EOCs (Biology, English II and Math I) If you are enrolled in an EOC, you MUST attend an assigned remediation for one block per week. Remediation blocks will be smaller and focused specifically on what you need to learn for a particular standard based on how you do on assessments
7
Tutorials Tutorials will be required if you are failing or need to make up work. Your teacher will give you a written slip with the tutorial date and block It is your responsibility to communicate with your teacher if the time conflicts with a required remediation We encourage you to voluntarily attend tutorials to do homework
8
Buy-Back Opportunity From now on, you can earn buy-back credit during ANY EOC remediation or tutorial with your teacher It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to tell your teacher to give you Buy-Back credit at the time of your remediation or tutorial Buy-Back credit is only earned from the teacher whose class you missed with the exception of a remediation You must serve two remediation and/or tutorial POWER Blocks to make up one absence for that teacher Example: To buy back a class from Ms. Taylor, you would attend Monday B (remediation) + Friday A Tutorial = 1 DAY Buy Back
9
Student Expectations for P.O.W.E.R.
