Bondbreakers AVOIDING PROBLEMS
2
Definition DEFINITION
A bondbreaker is a material used to prevent adhesion of newly placed concrete and substrate
3
This will Cause Panels to Stick
Most Common Causes of Bondbreaker Problems Improper Cure of Slab Improper Finish on Slab Insufficient Application of Bondbreaker Uneven Application of Bondbreaker Rain on Bondbreaker prior to drying Not allowing Bondbreaker to completely dry Hot Weather practices not followed Improper Mixing This will Cause Panels to Stick
4
Proper Cure of Slab THIS IS ESSENTIAL:
SLAB MUST BE CURED IMMEDIATELY AFTER FINISHING USE AN ASTM C-309 CURING COMPOUND SUCH AS AN ACRYLIC OR BONDBREAKER AS A CURE
5
Curing of Slab – Option #1
ACRYLIC or RESIN-BASED CURING COMPOUND MEETS ASTM C-309 APPLICATION RATE 200 SQ FT/GALLON
6
Curing of Slab – Option #2
USE BONDBREAKER AS CURE COAT APPLY EVENLY AT 200 SQ FT/GAL
7
Mixing Water-Based Bondbreaker
EACH DRUM HAS A INTREGAL MIXER EACH DRUM HAS A MIXING HANDLE PROVIDED USE SUPPLIED MIXER ONLY DRUM MUST BE IN STANDING POSITION MIX FOR MINIMUM OF 3 MINUTES MIX BEFORE EACH USE (24 HR PERIOD) ROLLING DRUM IS NOT PROPER MIXING
8
Coverage Rates ALWAYS FOLLOW RECOMMENDED APPLICATION COVERAGE RATES
CURE COAT SQ.FT/gallon 1st bond breaker coat = 400 SQ.FT/GAL 2nd or additional bond breaker coat = SQ.FT/GAL – Applied at right angles
9
Coverage Rates POROUS OR ROUGH CONCRETE WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL BONDBREAKER BONDBREAKER RAINED ON PRIOR TO DRYING WILL REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL COAT.
10
Tests PRESENCE OF BONDBREAKER CAN BE CHECKED
SOAPY FEEL TEST: VERIFIES PRESENCE OR BONDBREAKER, BUT NOT NECESSARILY SUFFICIENT COVERAGE WATER BEAD TEST: WATER THAT READILY BEADS ON THE SURFACE USUALLY INDICATES THE SUFFICIENT PRESENCE OF BONDBREAKER
11
Hot Weather Practices HOT WEATHER REQUIRES SPECIAL ATTENTION:
HOT WEATHER AIR TEMP > 90o F OR SLAB TEMP > 130oF FLOOD SLAB TO SSD PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF BONDBREAKER... REMOVE EXCESS WATER.
12
Weather Considerations
RAIN RE-COAT IF NECESSARY HOT / WINDY INCREASE APPLICATION RATE COMMENCE CURING IMMEDIATELY FOG SLAB TO SSD PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF BONDBREAKER COOL AND DAMP MAY INCREASE DRYING TIME MORE LIGHT COATS ALLOW EACH COAT TO DRY THOROUGHLY
13
Summary BONDBREAKERS ARE OFTEN BLAMED FOR PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM POOR PROCESS ALWAYS FOLLOW RECOMMENDED APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS BE AWARE OF WEATHER CONDITIONS ALLOW EACH COAT TO DRY THOROUGHLY TEST FOR PRESENSE OF BONDBREAKER MISUSE OF BONDBREAKER REQUIRES EXPENSIVE REMEDIES PROPER USE OF BONDBREAKER IS THE MOST CRITICAL PHASE OF TILT CONSTRUCTION
14
THE COST OF BONDBREAKER IS LOW COMPARED TO THE COST OF ONE STUCK PANEL
Remember THE COST OF BONDBREAKER IS LOW COMPARED TO THE COST OF ONE STUCK PANEL
