X-Rays By: Sawyer Hubbard

Accidental discovery of x-rays
Wilhelm Rontgen Accidental discovery of x-rays In 1895, Wilhelm Rontgen discovered that when he shone a light onto a tungsten plate, unidentified rays made a phosphorescent screen glow green.

THE FIRST X-RAY The first x-ray was of Wilhelm’s wife. On her hand is a ring- it is the black circle on her finger.

The X-Ray Machine An x ray machine is a lead case with an oil bath inside of it. Electrons hit a plate which reflects x rays out of a filtered hole.

Tungsten Plate The plate that reflects x rays from the speeding electrons coming in is tungsten-an element that is very efficient for this

Film When the x ray hits the film on the other side of the object, it makes a shadow that looks 3 dimensional

Absorb most amount of x rays Absorb no x rays
X Ray Absorbtion Absorb most amount of x rays Absorb no x rays Absorb some of x rays

Artificial Contrast Artificial contrast is injected into an organ and when an x ray is taken afterwards, the contrast absorbs the x rays Iodine Barium Sulfate

Many problems can occur when using x rays
Radiation Internal Organs Pregnancy

Radiation Radiation occurs when the x rays pass through the body. Protective coverings such as aprons made of iron, protect the patients parts not receiving examination. Iron apron

Pregnancy X rays may affect pregnant women differently because the uterus is more sensitive to harmful radiation.

Internal Organs Internal organs, such as the stomach and the liver are like the uterus in women but these can be protected with iron aprons
