1 Mood and Tone

2 Mood The way the reader feels when reading a story.
The climate of  feeling in a literary work. The choice of setting, objects, details, images, and words all contribute towards creating a specific mood. For example, an author may create a mood of mystery around a character or setting but may treat that character or setting in an ironic, serious, or humorous tone

3 Tone The author’s attitude towards the characters or the story.  The author may not like the characters, and may make fun of them in a subtle way.  Tone is different from mood because it describes how the author feels about the characters, whereas mood describes how the reader feels when reading the story. Some possible attitudes are pessimism, optimism, earnestness, seriousness, bitterness, humorous, and joyful. An author’s tone can be revealed through choice of words and details.

4 Tone Tone is a particular way of expressing feelings or attitudes that will influence how the reader feels about the characters, events, and outcomes. Speakers show tone more easily than writers because they can use voice tone, gesture, and facial expressions. A writer must use words alone.

5 Group Activity Get into groups of 3-4.
Each group will take a card with one of the following tone words written on it: sadness, courage, tension, sympathy, love, happiness, pride, sarcastic, excitement, hate, fear, anxiety. Write a description of a dog walking in the park, conveying the attitude on the card. You may not use the word written on the card in their description. When writing is complete, talk amongst your group members to determine which tools were used to show tone in writing.

6 Group Activity Each group will read the description.
After each description, class members will try to guess the tone. Successful writers will share their tools with the class. Did you demonstrate tone in your writing? How do you know? What tone did you convey? Highlight at least one passage to rewrite in order to enhance the effectiveness of tone in your writing. Share rewrites with the class.
