6. What Is Hair?
Hair is comprised of keratins - a tough fibrous protein. It is harder than the keratin found within the epidermal layer of the skin and more durable. They do not slough off, but instead stick together making it possible to have long hair. These keratins contain different levels and configurations of sulphur, which will give hair its shape.
Straight hair has a round shaft.
Wavy hair has an oval shaped shaft.
Kinky hair has a flattened shaft.

7. Hair Shaft The hair shaft is comprised of the: Medulla - core
Cortex - middle layer
Cuticle - outer layer, which is subject to stress and damage

8. Core
In the centre of some hairs is the medulla, a soft, spongy mass of tissue. Coarse hair generally has this layer, while fine hair usually does not The presence or absence of a medulla does not have much to do with how your hair behaves when you wash, colour, or curl it, so it does not need attention.

9. Cortex
Surrounding the core is the cortex, which gives hair its special qualities such as elasticity and curl. The cortex also contains granules of the hair pigment melanin, produced when the hair was growing in its follicle. The granules are of two types: smooth, dark granules; which tend to be regularly positioned within the cortex; and lighter granules that are more irregular in shape and which are scattered randomly through the cortex.

10. Cuticle
The outermost portion of the hair shaft is the cuticle. The cuticle is responsible for much of the mechanical strength of the hair fiber. Made of flattened cells that overlap like the tiles on a terracotta roof, the cuticle protects the inside of the hair shaft from damage. Human hair typically has six to eight layers of cuticle.

11. Cuticle
Shiny hair is a sign of health because the layers of the cuticle lie flat and reflect light. When the scales of the cuticle lie flat they overlap tightly, so the inner layers are well protected from heat, sun, chlorine and all the other hazards that can come from living in our environment. When hair is damaged, the scales may separate and allow hair to become dry. Since the scales on dry hair do not protect the two inner layers well, hair can break and look dull.

14. Biological Factors Affecting Hair
With age, the anagen phase (growth phase) of hair shortens, reducing the maximum attainable hair length. Additionally, hair’s natural conditioner (sebum) production decreases. Hair then becomes drier, subsequently losing its luster and softness while increasing porosity. This causes it to lose more moisture and compromises its strength and resilience.

15. Environmental Factors Affecting Hair
Sun and environmental exposure to chlorine, heavy metals, nicotine, and exhaust gas degrade the hair’s cuticle, exposing the cortex which can wear and eventually cause the hair to break.

16. Mechanical Factors Affecting Hair
Colouring, perming, heat styling and aggressive combing or brushing damage the hair as these treatments compromise the cuticle. Hair is then more prone to further and deeper damage.

Much of what we do can alter the structure of the cuticle and affect the health of our hair. Hair responds to its environment and to its mechanical and chemical history. Damage can result from:

In a study conducted by a manufacturer, they found that unhealthy looking hair made women appeared older. A “back of head test” study was conducted where individuals were shown pictures of the backs of women’s heads and given five seconds to respond. The pictures with women’s hair that was “roughed up and frayed” were consistently seen as older than those with shiny and smooth hair.
