2 How many people were there? England before 1066: What was it like?
Who rules? The Romans ruled up to about 410. 800AD onwards Vikings from Denmark and Sweden invaded. The Vikings lived in the North and east. Anglo-Saxons lived in the west and the south. 11th century and England is invaded by tribes from northern Europe. 1065 Edward the Confessor ruled England. How many people were there? The population of the whole of England was about 1.5 million. (64.1 million today) Mainly farmers. People lived in small villages. Only a few towns. Were people religious? Everyone was Christian and went to church. England before 1066: What was it like? How rich was England? The rich were very rich and the poor were very poor. Out of 100 people 2 were rich. Made money by trading in leather, wool or iron. Poor had to grow their own food. If the harvest was poor they would have to eat roots, leaves and animals they could catch. How do we know this? We can use pictures drawn at the time. We can look at old buildings and churches. Coins, weapons, jewellery and books from the time also help.
