The efficient way to use computers in English class
Step 1 What are the different ways I can use a computer in the classroom? The efficient way to use computers in English class Not many teachers in Japan use computers in classes. If you would like to use computers in class after listening and watching my presentations today and tomorrow, my research would be successful. But even if you would not like to, I would like you to some day. Step 2 What are the benefits of computers compared to using the blackboard and/or handouts? Step 3 What are the various activities or ways that the computer can be used to address different ways of learning (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing)? Last winter, I had an opportunity to give teachers of English a demonstration of using PowerPoint at Iwate Education Centre. There I recognised that not many teachers use computers in their classes, in addition, I had some problems, for example, it takes time to prepare the lesson, and the benefits might not be worth the time or effort. Therefore I would like to research the efficient way to use computers in English class. Now I would like to start my PowerPoint, but it consists of 30 slides. So I have to click quickly. If you take an interest in my presentation, I would like to give a copy of my PowerPoint file later. Step 4 I would like to learn how to create English lesson plans using the computer in a more efficient manner. Junshi Kameyama (Kuzumaki S.H.S., Iwate Pref.) Learning Support Main Tool Word Excel Access
word processors to write up and present their work Word using a spreadsheet to enter their data collected as part of an investigation, creating charts, and interpreting the results Excel using a database to enter data collected as part of an investigation, interrogating the database by searching and sorting, in order to answer questions to help solve problems which form part of the investigation Access Excel is software of the spreadsheets. enter: to put names, numbers, details, etc. in a list, book or computer interrogate: to obtain information from a computer or other machine We can do research activities by using database.

Learning Support Main Tool
using hypermedia to write up, lay out and present their work for publication on the Internet Word PowerPoint Internet using the Internet and CD-ROMs to help with research during an investigation. CD-ROM We can give presentations or make websites by hypermedia, such as PowerPoint.

annotate text in innovative ways Word, Excel
Activity Main Tool use a wide range of strategies to explore contrasts, comparisons and connections dynamically Word annotate text in innovative ways Word, Excel enrich or broaden the context of literary study see texts in alternative versions Internet use a wide range of analytical and critical techniques Excel annotate: to add notes to a book or text, giving explanations or comments
7
Activity Main Tool sort and process text and data quickly and efficiently Excel order and arrange text and data experimentally, using combinations of word, image, sound and hypertext Word PowerPoint save, record, edit and adapt their work quickly and efficiently Any software retain evidence of the editing process so that it can be examined

compose multi-authored texts
Activity Main Tool change the organisational structure and qualities of texts to suit different audiences and purposes Word compose multi-authored texts select from a wider range of audiences, throughout the world Internet exercise choice of medium and design while composing We can make a brochure or a leaflet of the students’ works, such as essays or poems by computers.

What is Mind Map? Mind Mapping is an important technique that improves the way you take notes, and supports and enhances your creative problem solving. By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and…………………… During this research, I knew a skill and software of Mind Map. I will show you what Mind Map is, and what it can do by using Mind Maps.

We can do many things by Mind Maps.
For example, Mind Map can summarise information or think through complex problems, furthermore be an effective support to learn something by heart.

Step 3 What are the various activities or ways that the computer can be used to address different ways of learning (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing)?
16
1. Exploring and investigating
Pupils explore and investigate information, ideas, language structure and usage in English. 2. Responding and interpreting In English, pupils respond to and interpret literary and non-literary texts in spoken and written language and so develop and demonstrate their understanding and appreciation. 1. There is much information concerned with English on websites. So we can get much useful information or many databases from the Internet. 2. Mark a text to emphasise the use of emotive terms in an argument.
17
3. Reflecting and evaluating
In English, pupils reflect upon and evaluate both their own and others' language use, spoken and written, to refine their own practice and learn from others. 4. Composing and transforming In English, pupils use language creatively, in speech and writing, to express their ideas, thought and feelings. They use and adapt material for different audiences and purposes. 3. If teachers collect students’ common mistakes of English grammar or usages, or good works, the students can share their mistakes or others’ good works through computers. Students can edit their sentences easily.
18
5. Presenting and performing
In English, pupils present and perform in speech and writing to a range of audiences, as part of the learning process and to demonstrate the outcomes of their learning. 6. Communicating and collaborating In English, pupils communicate and collaborate with many audiences and communities in and beyond the class room, as part of both the process and the product of their work.

Step 4 I would like to learn how to create English lesson plans using the computer in a more efficient manner. I made 5 teaching plans.

Correction and comparison of writing Skill or Domain Writing
Teaching Plan 1 Activity Correction and comparison of writing Skill or Domain Writing Procedure 1. Students send their writings to teachers by . 2. Teachers correct their writings and feed back to each student by . 3. In the next class, teachers show good students’ writings on the screen. If necessary, teachers can print out and pass them out. Tool , Word
21
Comparison of summaries Skill or Domain Reading, Writing
Teaching Plan 2 Activity Comparison of summaries Skill or Domain Reading, Writing Procedure 1. Groups or pairs of students send their summaries of the text to teachers by . 2. In the next class, teachers show their summaries on the screen, and give some comments to each group or pair. If necessary, teachers can print out and pass them out. Tool , Word

Activity Network of Vocabulary Skill or Domain Vocabulary Tool
Teaching Plan 3 Activity Network of Vocabulary Skill or Domain Vocabulary Procedure 1. Teachers show one key category word of the lesson in the center of the FreeMind. 2. Students think words associated with the key word. 3. Each student enters one word he/she thought on the FreeMind. 4. When the Mind Map has completed, teachers will print out and pass it out next time. Tool FreeMind

Activity Sharing of ideas Skill or Domain Writing Tool FreeMind
Teaching Plan 4 Activity Sharing of ideas Skill or Domain Writing Procedure 1. Teachers show a topic of writing and questions about the topic. 2. Each group of the students answers the questions by their imaginations. 3. Teachers consolidate their ideas by Mind Maps. 4. Students share their ideas and write their own stories. Tool FreeMind

Teaching Plan 5 Activity Writing an essay or memories and presentation (e.g. school trip) Skill or Domain Writing, Speaking Procedure 1. Teachers show one key category word of the essay or memories to have students write in the center of the FreeMind. 2. Students think words associated with the key word. 3. Each student enters one word he/she thought on the FreeMind. 4. When the mind map has completed, students write their essays or memories by Word or PowerPoint. 5. Next time, students present their works in class. Tool FreeMind, Word, PowerPoint

PowerPoint In this research, I was interested in using PowerPoint efficiently, because I had used it several times in my classes. In fact, it usually takes time to create files of PowerPoint presentations, but once the files have been created, they can be reused many times or shared with other teachers. Therefore, it is not very suitable to use PowerPoint in the classes based on course books. PowerPoint is suitable for practices and drills of grammar or vocabulary, etc. Of course, teachers can practice or drill without PowerPoint, but it can provide students with audiovisual practices or drills, which will enhance students’ motivations. If you want to see some samples of PowerPoint, please access Finally, I would like to refer to PowerPoint.
28
I hadn’t made any PowerPoint for practices or drills before I came here.
So I have tried to make one drill file by PowerPoint. My presentation is almost finishing. Last but not least… Sample of PowerPoint
