Summarizing vs. Paraphrasing

Summary Rules: Text should be much shorter than the original work Must use own words with limited quotations. Any words taken directly from the original source MUST be cited. Even if you are using just a few words. Definition: (n) A brief statement or account of the main points of something.

Paraphrase Rules: The new text will include all of the main ideas of the original text. May be shorter or longer than the original text. Must use all original words. Will lead to a better understanding of the original text. Definition: (n). Another rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form.

Summary Practice First read the two page description of The Reformation in Europe. Look up any unfamiliar words. Write down any questions that you have regarding the content of the article. Then, choose a paragraph to summarize. CIRCLE the paragraph on your reading and summarize it on your own paper. Count the words. Did you use fewer than the original? Did you include all of the main points of the paragraph?

Paraphrasing Practice
Then, choose a paragraph to paraphrase. Place a STAR next the paragraph on your reading and paraphrase it on your own paper. Go back to your list of rules about paraphrasing. Did you paragraph meet them all?
